Program Description:
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
A cultural and culinary immersion experience exploring the foodways of  Italy and Greece.  The course will develop students’ understanding of the Mediterranean diet, organic food systems, and the Slow Foods Movement in relationship to health promotion.  While abroad students will visit local markets, food factories, and eateries, building upon course content.
 
Tour Description:
You’ll eat your way through the Parthenon and the Colosseum as Titus did, and wonder how these architectural icons could have been any more breathtaking in his time. You will learn about and enjoy the foodsystems and culinary delights of ancient times. Shimmering marble and cracking stone—in both cities—serve as marked reminders of the peaks of both as ancient world-conquering powers.

LANGUAGE  
All instruction on this program will be conducted English. No previous knowledge of a foreign language is required.

COURSE INFORMATION
All participants have the option of participating in this program for academic credit. If students opt to earn academic credit, the course that will appear on their transcript is NTD 435- Special Topics in Nutrition: Culinary Immersion of the Foodways of Italy and Greece (3 credit hours).

EXAMPLES OF EXCURSIONS
5 sightseeing tours led by expert local guides in Rome; Vesuvius; Pompeii; Delphi; Athens/ 
Visits to local food markets, factories, and eateries. 
Entrances: Sistine Chapel; St. Peter's Basilica; Colosseum; Roman Forum; Vesuvius; Ruins of Pompeii; Delphi site; Delphi Museum; Acropolis.
 
PROGRAM OPTIONS
Optional excursions: Florence; Cape Sounion; With extension: Shore Excursion Package to Kusadasi and Crete (includes: Ancient Ephesus and Minoan Palace of Knossos) 
 
PROGRAM COSTS
All participants will pay a program fee of $3,359 which includes round-trip airfare, all hotel accommodations, most meals, and all excursions.  All students will also be billed the WCU $100 study abroad application fee upon submission of their application.

Students who choose to participate in this program for academic credit will also pay regular WCU tuition/fee rates for the 3 credit hour course in addition to the fees listed above. 

Items not included in the costs listed above, but should be budgeted (estimated around $750): WCU's Mandatory International Insurance (approximately $22.50), tips, additional meals that are not included, and spending money.
