Program Description
This program is designed to give teacher candidates (undergraduate and post-baccalaureate) in the Department of Languages and Cultures the opportunity to complete the second half of their student teaching assignment (EDS 412) in Guanacaste, Costa Rica teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) at the Academia Teocali. Only teacher candidates in the aforementioned department may apply.
Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
All participants will be staying in the homes of host teachers or administrators of Academia Teocali.
Language & Pre-Requisites
Teacher Candidates will be teaching English as a foreign language. While previous knowledge of Spanish would be helpful, it is not required for participation in this program. All Teacher Candidates of all languages (French, German, Spanish and Russian) are encouraged to apply.  

Applicants should have a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher and should have earned a B or higher in LAN 401/503.
Teacher Candidates in the Department of Languages and Cultures will receive credit for EDS 412 (6 credit hours).
Program Costs
All participants will pay WCU their regular tuition rates for the 6 credit hours taken on this program. In addition, all students will be charged a $100.00 study abroad application fee upon submission of their applications. All participants will also be required to purchase WCU’s mandatory international health insurance (approximately $100.00). On-site program costs are $600, which includes housing, transportation to and from school, laundry services, and dinners (M-F).  Other out-of-pocket costs include round-trip airfare, all additional meals, weekend excursions, and personal spending.
Financial Aid
As this program is a WCU program, students that qualify for financial aid for a typical term at WCU may also qualify for funding to assist with the cost of this program. Students should consult with Mr. Dana Parker ( in the Financial Aid office for specific details about aid eligibility and required forms. In addition, students may also apply for Study Abroad Travel Awards and PASSHE Travel Awards through the Center for International Programs. Additional information about the application process for these Travel Awards may be found in the scholarships section of the Center for International Programs website.
