PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Students will explore Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) and France’s La Securite Sociale provision of healthcare. Students will compare those to health policies such as the Affordable Care Act, Medicare and Medicaid and the provision of healthcare for the citizens of the U.S.

ACCOMMODATION

All participants will stay in double or triple occupancy hotels located in London and Paris.
 
LANGUAGE

All instruction on this program will be conducted in English and an English-speaking guide will be present in Paris. No prior foreign language experience is required for participation.
 
COURSE INFORMATION

All participants will be enrolled for NSG 318 (undergraduate) Special Topics in Nursing, NSG 531 (graduate), or NSG 703 (doctoral). Each course is 3 credits. DNP students may use this time towards required supervised practice hours. 

EXAMPLES OF POSSIBLE EXCURSIONS/SEMINARS
Seminars/webinars will focus on the public healthcare concerns for all members in society as well as the following topics:
  • Review Healthcare systems: US vs. UK and France.
  • The role of the nurse or advanced practice nurse in the UK or French healthcare system.
  • Determining current healthcare policies and the political climate regarding the provision of healthcare to citizens.
  • Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) concepts, multicultural issues, access to healthcare screening and preventative services, and access to healthcare services across the lifespan.
  • Discuss key public healthcare needs for a global population, develop a plan of action, and develop educational program that will address a public healthcare need for a selected population of interest. 
  • Travel to London and Paris with immersion experiences exploring the healthcare system(s) and the role of the nurse and the advanced practice nurse.
  • Post-trip shared information and presentations via D2L related to course content and shared experiences.
  • Seminars/Webinars will focus on the public health concerns for all members in society as well as the following topics: healthcare system review US vs. UK and France, evaluating marginalized populations in the US and evaluating current healthcare policies and the political climate regarding the provision of healthcare to underserved or marginalized citizens.
  • Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) concepts, multicultural issues, access to healthcare screening and preventative services, and access to healthcare services across the lifespan. 
  • Students will discuss key public healthcare needs of a global population.
Excursions included in the program fee:
  • London – Royal College of Physicians, Making of thoroughly modern medicine walking tour, Old Operating Theatre Museum, Royal College of Nursing, St Thomas Hospital and Florence Nightingale Museum and Bethlehem Royal Hospital Museum. 
  • Paris –  Île de la Cité walking tour, Museum of the History of Medicine and Statue of Death, Tour of the American Hospital in Paris, Seine River Cruise
  • Additional excursion such as Kensington Palace, Tower of London, The Louvre or Versailles are an additional expense. Please note, London has many FREE museums, such as the British Museum and Victoria & Albert that you may visit during free time or your free day. Paris has many free museum, gardens and architecturally interesting areas that you may also visit (Notre Dame, flea and antique markets). Please note that these are possible excursions/seminars and subject to change at any time.

PROGRAM OPTIONS
This course may be taken for credit or non-credit. If you are an undergraduate student and do not need additional credits towards graduation, you may enroll as a graduate student and receive 3 credits towards a graduate nursing elective.
 
PROGRAM COSTS

In addition to the regular WCU tuition rates for the 3 credit hour course, all participants will be billed a Program Fee of $4,455 on their WCU Bursar bill, which includes round-trip airfare from the USA to Europe, all hotel accommodations, and most meals throughout the program. Also included are all in-country transportation, train tickets between the UK and France, all cultural excursions and hospital visits/seminars. All participants will also be billed a $100 study abroad application fee through the Bursar's office upon applying for this program and will be required to purchase the mandatory WCU international insurance. 

Not included in the costs listed above are additional meals not included in the program (estimated around $200) and personal spending money.
