Program Description:
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The program will increase educational opportunities for graduate social work students in the areas of human rights and international social work practice.  Students will travel across the island while being emerged in educational activities related to personal identity, respecting cultural differences, developing intercultural understanding, and bridging cultural differences.

Santiago, Dominican Republic
 
ACCOMMODATION

All participants will stay in double occupancy hotel rooms for the duration of the program.
 
LANGUAGE

The language of instruction on this program is English.
 
COURSE INFORMATION

SWG 590: Human Rights Exploration (3 credit hours)
 
EXAMPLES OF EXCURSIONS

The program will include guest lectures on Gender Rights, LGBT Rights in the DR, and Haitian Immigration policy.  Co-curricular site visits will include Accion Callejera, Oné Respe, Niños con una Esperanza, Altagracia Project, a historic district and UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a visit to a batey community and an international market on the Haitian border.  Students will also participate in a 3 day service learning project.
 
PROGRAM COSTS

In addition to the regular WCU tuition rates for the 3 credit hour course, all participants will pay WCU a program fee of $1,910 (paid in 3 parts after acceptance into the program) and a nonrefundable study abroad application fee of $100 (billed through the WCU Bursar's office upon applying to the program). 

Costs not included in the amounts above include the following out-of-pocket expenses:
Round-trip airfare to Santiago (estimated $650)
Passport/entry fees (estimated $150)
Some meals and spending money (approximately $200, depending on individual preferences).
