This course will build on ecological knowledge gained in BIO 270 and introduce students to tropical ecosystems including rainforests, cloud forests, coastal mangroves, and dry forests, all within the context of the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico.  This course will meet for four 2-hour blocks on the WCU campus in the Spring 2017 semester and will spend seven days over Spring Break in Puerto Rico.  The class will tour and learn about a range of tropical ecosystems on the island.  Students will also meet with local scientists studying aspects of tropical ecology including ecologically-sound agricultural practices and watershed management.  Field and classroom activities will require 10+ hours of student time per day during the trip and will occasionally include strenuous, muddy hiking.  This is a 3-credit Biology Elective with all the typical academic rigor of a 400-level course.
