Program Description:
Summer I course trip to Thailand incorporates GEO 304: Geography of Asia. This field course includes 16 days of travel within urban, rural, jungle, coastal, and marine landscapes of Central and Southern Thailand. Travel, fieldwork, and cultural immersion are core components of the disciplines of Geography.  This trip examines the geographic, political, economic, and cultural components of Thailand. We will learn about Thailand through trips to cultural sites, experience Buddhism, explore the jungle, karst topography, beaches and marine environments, travel throughout Bangkok, and experience life in rural and coastal Thailand.
Bangkok area, Krabi Province, and Phi Phi Island, Thailand
All participants on this program will stay in pre-arranged hotels.
All instruction for this program will be conducted in English. No prior Thai language experience is required to participate in this program (Dr. Coutu is fluent in Thai for translation).
All participants will be registered for GEO 304: Geography of Asia (3 credit hours).
Trip activities will take place in and around Bangkok (Ancient City Park, The Grand Palace and surrounding temples, Chatuchak Weekend Market, Ayuthaya Ancient Capital and river trip), Krabi Province, Southern Thailand, (Cooking School, Fossil Shell Beach, Emerald Pool/Hot Springs, Tiger Cave Monastery, market tours, Elephant Center Visit and sea kayaking) and Phi Phi Island in the Andaman Sea (snorkeling, jungle hike, ecotourism tour.)
In addition to the regular WCU tuition for the 3 credit hour course, all students will pay a program fee of $1,500 which includes all 16 nights of lodging, 14 excursions/activities, all in-country transportation, and 20 trip-related meals. In addition, all students will be billed the non-refundable $100 study abroad application fee upon applying to this program and will be required to purchase WCU's mandatory international insurance (estimated $35) upon acceptance into the program .

The program fees listed above do not include the round-trip air fare (estimated $1,000) or most meals (27 meals are student responsibility). 
The Department of Geography and Planning will have some scholarship travel money for Geography and Planning majors. Please contact the Department directly.  In addition, all participants are encouraged to visit the Center for International Programs scholarship information on their website.
